**PLEASE NOTE: The method listed below is not supported by RMIT ITS in any way, shape or form.

Hey Everyone,

Heres a quick tip to be able to print from an Apple MacOS device.

  • Open System Prefrences, and navigate to Printers & Scanners1.png

  • Click the + Icon, then right click on the menu bar and select "Customize Toolbar..."2.png

     3.png

  • Proceed by dragging the Advanced toggle into the Menu Bar next to the Windows button4.png

  • Click the Advanced button that is now in your menu bar5.png

  • Click Type and select "Windows printer via spoolss", it should be the last option in the list6.png

     7.png

  • Then, go down to where it says "URL:" and copy the following into the box without the quotation marks (ensuring that you remove any text currently in the box): "smb://10.85.201.28/RMIT-Global"8.png

  • Now change the text in the "Name" box to "RMIT-Global" (without the quotation marks)9.png

  • Finally, click the "Use" box and select "Generic PCL Printer" and press Add10.png

  • Ensure you click the "Duplexer" option on the next screen if you ever wish to print double sided, then click Okay

Yay! You can now print directly from your Mac whilst on the RMIT-University network, without having to constantly login to myDesktop!

(P.S. The first time you try to print anything it will ask you for your login details, this is your RMIT Student/Staff Number and Network/Email password -- make sure you click the remember checkbox otherwise you will constantly have to re-enter your details every time you wish to print)

Re: Guide to Printing From Your Own Mac

Hi @photiorfan and fellow RMIT students,

We just wanted to clarify on the above post: please be aware that the method posted is not supported by RMIT ITS in any way, shape or form.
Using the method posted for printing documents may result in print job errors or failures and we do not recommend this.

RMIT will not refund jobs which have been processed using the above method, so please proceed at your own risk.

If seeking to print at RMIT, please use either of the supported methods:
- use a RMIT computer (on which the RMIT Global queue will be available by default)
- You can upload your file from your personal device to MyDesktop and print from there. (Step 4 of this article will show the Upload/Download button).

Kind regards,

Adam
