Where to live in Melbourne?

Can anyone suggest the best place to live around Melbourne which has good public transport and is not too expensive, but also generally a nice area?

Is it better to get the train or the tram into the city campus?

Can't tell you about the nice area, but train over tram for me. Some service cancellations now and then but no traffic jams.

Try the North East, North West or Northern Suburbs that are directly off the train network.  Cheaper, community based living and trains are better than getting stuck in traffic.
