The Community Grocer

Every Friday, outside the Community Hall at the public housing estate at 510 Lygon St, a small market pops up selling affordable and fresh fruit and vegetables to approximately 150 local Carlton residents. The market opens at 9.30am and sells more than 50 types of fruit and vegetables at prices on par with Victoria Markets. There is also a free vegetarian BBQ lunch at 11.00am and food relief is available from Secondbite.

The Community Grocer started in 2014 with the aim of improving access for people living in public and social housing to fresh and affordable food. Carlton was chosen as the initial site because it is considered an 'affordable fresh food dessert' with the average cost of fruit and vegetables being prohibitively high for people living on a low-income.

The market is open to everyone, and welcomes students and residents from surrounding Carlton, as well as the estate itself.
